چکیده

Chatter is one of the most important limitations on the productivity of milling process. In order to avoid the poor surface quality and potential machine damage due to chatter, the material removal rate is usually reduced. The analysis and modeling of chatter is complicated due to the time varying dynamics of milling chatter which can be avoided without sacrificing the productivity by using analytical methods presented in this paper. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Analytical models for high performance milling. Part I: Cutting forces, structural deformations and tolerance integrity

Milling is one of the most common manufacturing processes in industry. Despite recent advances in machining technology, productivity in milling is usually reduced due to the process limitations such as high cutting forces and stability. If milling conditions are not selected properly, the process may result in violations of machine limitations and part quality, or reduced productivity. The usua...

Stability of up-milling and down-milling, part 1: alternative analytical methods

The dynamic stability of the milling process is investigated through a single degree of freedom mechanical model. Two alternative analytical methods are introduced, both based on finite dimensional discrete map representations of the governing time periodic delay-differential equation. Stability charts and chatter frequencies are determined for partial immersion upand down-milling, and for full...

Stability of up-milling and down-milling, part 2: experimental verification

The stability of interrupted cutting in a single degree of freedom milling process was studied experimentally. An instrumented flexure was used to provide a flexible workpiece with a natural frequency comparable to the tooth pass frequency, mimicking high speed milling dynamics. The displacement of the system was sampled continuously and periodically once per cutter revolution. These data sampl...

Chatter Stability Characterization of Full-Immersion End-Milling Using a Generalized Modified Map of the Full-Discretization Method, Part 1: Validation of Results and Study of Stability Lobes by Numerical Simulation

The objective in this work is to generate and discuss the stability results of fully-immersed end-milling process with parameters; tool mass m 0.0431kg, tool natural frequency 5700 rads , damping factor ξ 0 . 0 2 and workpiece cutting coefficient C 3.5 10 Nm ⁄ . Different no of teeth is considered for the end-milling. Both 1-DOF and 2-DOF chatter models of the system are generated on the basis ...

An Analytical Design Method for Milling Cutters With Nonconstant Pitch to Increase Stability, Part 2: Application

Chatter stability in milling can be improved significantly using variable pitch cutters. The pitch angles can be optimized for certain chatter frequency and spindle speed ranges using the analytical method presented in the first part of this two-part paper. In this part, the improvement of productivity and surface finish are demonstrated in three example applications. It is shown that chatter s...
